Folorunsho Alakija


Nigeria’s first woman billionaire, Folorunsho Alakija started her journey to the top as a secretary in a bank in Nigeria in her 20s. She quit work at the bank and picked up a business in fashion after undergoing a course in fashion design in England. She was able to create her own fashion brand- Supreme Stiches. She did this for a while and then moved into the oil field after being able to get connected with influential people in the country. She named her company Famfa Limited and was able to explore oil on a 617000 acre block.

After sometime, she partnered with a company called Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, and shared her stake with the company, giving them about 40% of it.

Now Alakija is worth about $7.3 billion and still owns 60% stake in Famfa Limited and she is also the richest woman in Africa.


Mosunmola Abudu


We know her as Mo Abudu. Mo Abudu is a talk show host, TV producer, philantrophist and entrepreneur who lost her dad at the age of 11. She started out working with the Atlas Recruitment Consultancy company as a Recruitment Consultant in 1987 in the UK.

After getting to the position of Branch Manager at the firm, Mo decided to move to Nigeria in 1993 and started working for Esso Exploitation & Production Nigeria Limited (EXXON) as the Head of Human resources and Training. From there, she created her own private company known as Vic Lawrence & Associates Limited (VLA), whose purpose was the development of human resources.

Mo went on to create the ‘Moments with Mo’ TV show, ‘The Debaters’ and also owns a TV station on DSTv called EbonyLife Television (elTV) which is helping to build a successful Film, TV and Music industry. The station has attracted over 15 million viewers in about 44 countries.


Uche Pedro


Founder and MD of BellaNaija started her education in Nigeria before eventually leaving to Canada where she completed her BSc. In Business Administration in 2006.

As at the time she was in Canada, she started BellaNaija as a hobby and along the line started working for Shell company. Because of her love for fashion, Uche started her blog with just fashion stuff and subsequently, she started diversifying and bringing in various stories and breaking news.

Her website- BellaNaija is aimed at developing and bringing in innovative and interesting online media content, and this website attracts over a million viewers every month.

She’s married to Bode Pedro, son of the former deputy Governor of Lagos State.


Linda Ikeji




Linda Ikeji started working at the age of 17 as a waitress in order to support her family. She then moved into modelling in 1998 and stopped in 2005. In 2007, out of passion for giving information and writing, she started Linda Ikeji Blog and what started as a hobby became something she now earns a living from.

Linda Ikeji always wanted to be a journalist but she didn’t get what she wanted and rather than losing hope, she turned her blog into a powerful journalism tool and eventually fulfilling her dream. Now, together with Uche Pedro, Linda Ikeji has risen to be one of the wealthiest blogger in Nigeria and the world at large.

Her advice to the youths out there is to find what they are good at, discover their talent, work on it, pray, be patient and success will come.


With the success story of these women, becoming successful at what you do takes time and patience. When things don’t seem to be going well, or when one door seems to be closed for you, don’t give up. Keep pushing and with focus, you will get to your desired destination.
